Gauteng Kasi Roadshow – Eldorado Park

Ethnikids will be hosting a book reading at Eldorado Park Library, Gauteng, South Africa. Authors, Tracy-Lee Easthorpe and Bandile Sikwane will be reading their books 'Obnoxious Naledi and the Poppysmic Fairy' and 'Malome Lerata goes to the Library' to children in this community. These books feature characters of colour that they can identify with and have stories that they can relate to. This will not only encourage love for reading but will also promote self-love and love for South African languages, as one of the books has been written in Setswana.

World Science Day for Peace and Development

On 10 November, on the occasion of the World Science Day for Peace and Development 2019, multiple initiatives and events will be organized marking the celebration of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, being unique systems of knowledge and understanding of the world. The aim is to raise awareness on the importance of local and indigenous knowledge systems as tools to inform decision-making about fundamental aspects of day-to-day life and provide a foundation for local sustainable development.

This workshop will give participants the skills to work with Wikipedia to edit information about indigenous languages. This event is part of a larger #lingwiki initiative comprising edit-a-thons at multiple locations in honor of the UN Year of Indigenous Languages.
