The international workshop is held in the context of two major international events – 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and preparation for the International Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019. The aim of the workshop is to analyze the ways of using global processes related to the indigenous peoples’ rights at local (municipal) level. The workshop aims at finding connections between international standards and processes and grassroots efforts to realize indigenous peoples’ rights at the level of indigenous peoples’ settlements and communities. The experts and participants will share their experience and best practices as well as elaborate proposals for effective implementation of the ideas of the International Year of Indigenous Languages at the local level.
For the Republic of Karelia, this will be an important event in the course of preparation for the IX Congress of the Karelians of the Republic of Karelia. The workshop will become an educational platform for the activists and representatives of the municipal authorities. New initiatives and art projects will be presented during the workshop.
Organizers: The Centre for Support of Indigenous Peoples and Civic Diplomacy “Young Karelia” and the Youth Information and Legal Center for Indigenous Peoples “Nevond” with support of the Ministry for Ethnic and Regional Policy of the Republic of Karelia and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
The activists of the indigenous peoples’ organizations, representatives of public authorities and self-government bodies, national human rights institutions of the Republic of Karelia and of the regions of Northwest Russia as well as invited international experts and partners from Russian regions and foreign states can take part in the workshop.
