Lakehead University Celebrates 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages
This opening event would be the first of six activities throughout 2019 including an opening and closing ceremony. Our partner academic institution (Confederation College, also located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada) would also host six activities throughout 2019. All activities would be open to our post-secondary students, staff and faculty, as well as to the larger community and region to attend.
Lakehead has a long standing history of offering the Native Language Instructor’s Program (Ojibwe, OjiCree, Cree, Delaware – languages of First Nations people). This program prepares students to be qualified and registered as teachers in the province of Ontario, Canada.
This event is to create awareness on language revitalization and preservation specific to First Nations languages in the region of northwestern Ontario, Canada. The event will also create awareness of other International students attending Lakehead University and Confederation College. Our “Department of International Students” will be actively involved in our activities and we wish to create an opportunity to create awareness of our diverse community of learners through highlighting the various languages students speak on our campuses.
